Another Low-Level Administrator Killed in Myanmar’s Rakhine State

SITTWE, Rakhine State—A clerk of the Kyaukphyu Township General Administration Department in Rakhine State was abducted by a group of unknown men and killed in the early hours of Wednesday, township police confirmed to The Irrawaddy.

“We received a report on the morning of June 17 that a man was found dead by the side of the road to Taungshae Village. We sent the body to the hospital, and it was identified as GAD clerk U Soe Min Tun from Saichone Village,” Kyaukphyu Township police chief Police Captain Kyaw Zaw told The Irrawaddy.

The 40-year-old victim was at home with his family when he was abducted by a group of unknown men late on Tuesday night. The following day, his body was found by the road near the airport.

“His wife said a group of unknown men forcibly took him at around midnight,” Police Captain Kyaw Zaw said.

U Soe Min Tun’s head, abdomen and left arm were covered in bruises, according to township police.

“We don’t know why he was murdered. We have never heard of him having personal problems,” Kyaukphyu Township administrator U Soe Moe Kyaw told The Irrawaddy.

The widow of U Soe Min Tun opened a murder case with township police. Rakhine has seen a string of unsolved murders of lower-level administrative officials in recent years.
